When did you fall in love with hair?
I think it was when I first began to really understand it, which was probably three years into my career, back in 1987.
Are there any hairstyles you wish would disappear forever?
Styles sometimes come back in at the wrong time; timing has to be right for certain trends. The look I wish would just go away is probably the frizzy perm—it’s not flattering.
Celebrity clientele—do tell!
Most recently I’ve worked with Petra Nemcova as well as James Blunt, who has been a friend for years. Some of my regular clients include classic Hollywood and Broadway stars like Carrie Fisher, Jane Fonda, and Bebe Neuwirth.
What’s the number one look requested by your clients?
Lots of clients request a long, layered shag.
Whose hair would you like to get your hands on and style?
I was at an event recently and saw Donald Trump. I was looking at him, trying to figure out what’s going on there. It’s all his own hair and doesn’t look like there’s a bald spot. I’d do wonders for him.
What was your favorite decade
for hair?
Hair is about evolution, so I’m always looking forward to the next thing. That’s the nature of our business. I’m more interested in what’s coming next than in something we’ve already seen.
What’s your all-time favorite
haircare brand?
Nexxus, of course!
What can we expect to see on
Shear Genius?
Entertainment, that’s for sure. You should expect to see some really great hair and at the end, I hope, a true winner.
Do you have any favorites among stylists competing on the show?
Of course! In the interest of fair play, I won’t divulge who they are, but there were a few standouts I really admired.
We’re so excited to see the show—can you divulge any juicy spoilers?
Unfortunately I can’t give anything away, but tune in … I promise there’ll be lots of drama and fun.
